Original Danish M1867 Remington Rolling Block Rifle Saber Bayonet by Gebrüder Weyersberg

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available: This is a very nice example of the Yataghan-style saber bayonet for the Danish M1867 Remington Rolling Block Rifle. Like many of the bayonets for this rifle, this example was contract made in Germany.

The ricasso of the blade is marked GEBR WEYERSBERG / SOLINGEN, the logo of Gebrüder Weyersberg, Waffenfabrik, which from 1859 onward operated a factory on Hochstrasse in the Ohligs area of the City of Solingen. Called "The City of Blades", Solingen is a world-renowned edged weapon area, with a history dating back to the middle ages. The Weyersberg family itself had a history of swordmaking going back at least 6 generations. The company had numerous contacts and customers in Europe, and supplied weapons to Napoleon's army, as well as to the Prussian and Russian armies during the 19th century.

The sudden death of Hermann Weyersberg in 1883 caused a management issue, and the manufacturing portion of the company was amalgamated with W.R. Kirschbaum to form the well-known firm of Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co. As part of this agreement the sales and trading portion of Weyersberg continued under numerous brand names. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter’s work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS.

This bayonet also has a leaf spring catch, and not a coil spring, indicating production prior to 1884. Along with the Danish Crown on the pommel, this is definitely the correct bayonet for a Danish Remington. It is also marked on the cross guard with Danish regimental markings: 2AB 202, (2nd Artillery Battalion, Weapon 202) and bears serial number 44817 on the opposite side.

The leather of the grips still shows the original checkering, though it is worn, and the leather has shrunk somewhat with age. The blade is in very good condition with a sharpened blade, and the included scabbard is in very good shape as well. It shows the expected wear, and does have a bend 2 inches above the bottom fitting, however it is still solid and looks great. The bayonet catch is fully functional, though the leaf spring does look to be a bit bent.

A very nice example, perfect to go with your Danish Remington Rolling block rifle!
