Original Dutch East Indies Issue Belgian Made Flintlock Naval Pistol - circa 1820

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This type of Pistol was manufactured in Belgium, which was under Napoleon Bonaparte's control until 1814. Production continued after the battle of Waterloo in 1815 and very possibly into the 1820's. Belgium was an Industrial powerhouse, with its great capacity coming from the City of Liège, where gun making was a key industry, and would end up supplying Military Weapons all over Europe after Belgian Independence in 1830.

There is no provision for ramrod, the mounts are all of brass and the grade of manufacture is really quite high. Probably one of the most encountered original flintlock martial pistols from Europe encountered to day. There are few maker markings on the gun, except for some proofs and a small round cartouche in the middle of the lock plate. Close inspection shows that it looks to be "Pegon Script", which is a modified Arabic script used in the Dutch East Indies. These colonial possessions of Holland were being rapidly expanded during the early 19th century, and as with any Empire, arms were needed for defense. The design of the pistol is identical to other Dutch pistols from the time period, except for the different markings. The quality of manufacture is definitely European.

The pistol is fitted with a 9" barrel showing a small proof mark that we cannot make out. Its overall length is almost 16" and has a large lanyard ring on the bottom of the brass mounted butt cap. All the mounts are brass and the overall condition is really nice. The stock has a lovely honey color to it, and shows only light wear from use in service. There are no cracks or repairs that we can see. The lock is functional, holding correctly at half cock and only releasing at full.

A great European Naval flintlock pistol, deployed for use in the Dutch East Indies! Fully cleaned and ready to display!
