Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice mid 19th century "Scatter Gun", fitted with double short 29" barrels, each approximately .75" in diameter. This would indicate a standard size of 12 bore/gauge. The left percussion lock is faintly marked WALTER LOCK & CO. just below the barrel, and the right lock has traces of the same marking. These sort of weapons were the staple all over the United States in pre Civil War days. However, the interesting feature here is the addition of Military Style Sling Swivels, with the front one still in place the rear one only missing the sling loop, the support stud still remaining. Shotguns, more commonly known then as SCATTER GUNS, were not intended to be "aimed," just be pointed in the general direction and fired.
Slings were meant for two reasons, to steady the weapon to obtain an accurate shot or for easy transportation by being able to sling the weapon across your back while on horseback which rather suggests this may have been pressed into use in the War between the States, particularly by a "Home Guard" or "Militia unit".
This interesting Anti-Bellum Scatter gun that has certainly seen a lot of use and is great for hanging over the fireplace NOT to take to the range. There are traces of crude checkering on the wrist, and overall it has a great look. The locks function but are a bit temperamental. This may have seen serious Civil War service or in the Gold Rush or just in the Old West.
A Nostalgic old Percussion cap clunker, ready to display!
