Original Finnish Winter War Era Model 1940 “Wartsila” Steel Helmet - Complete

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Now this is a rather rare helmet from WWII! When it comes to “Finnish M40” we immediately think of the German style M40 helmet the Finns produced, not this one. The Finn M40, commonly referred to as the Wartsila was copied from the Swedish M37, was produced under license at Wartsila Oy and Kone-ja Silta. Nearly 67,000 were manufactured during WWII.

These differed from the Swedish M37 by having a "W" stamp in the rear rim of the helmet, also a red label can sometimes be found in the interior shell with the manufacturer details though both are not visible on this example. Lastly the color was green as opposed to gray. The liners were made in Finland also by Friitala Nahka Oy.

This example is in wonderful condition but it does show signs of honest wear. The 3 panel liner is still solid as is the chinstrap. Just like the Swedish M37, the helmet features a shell design distinct from its predecessors, being more hemispherical in its appearance with a simplified shape. The M1937 shared the same liner as its former designs, featuring a three pad liner attached directly to the shell like the M1926, along with a simple buckle chinstrap. Sweden would provide Finland with this model helmet as aid during their conflict with the Soviet Union (known as the Winter War). Finland produced a copy of the M37 known as the M40 at the Wartsila Oy and Kone-ja Silta plants.

A great example ready for further research and display.
