Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely example of a French Naval telescope in its original case, from the era of the Franco-Prussian War. The telescope is engraved on the side with:
E. Lorieux, Pere
a Paris
This indicates manufacture by Edmond Lorieux (1832-1909) of Paris, a well-known optician and official supplier to the Dépôt des Cartes et Plans de la Marine. In the 1867 exhibition, Paris, he was awarded a silver medal for a sextant and a reflecting circle. This would be the correct maker for a telescope during the Franco-Prussian War.
The telescope appears to be in working condition, but could likely use some work. The original case has some woodworm damage as shown, and measures 32" x 4" x 4½”. The hinges and latches still work well.
A great Franco-Prussian war telescope, ready for further research and display.
