Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This lovely French flintlock colonial issue musketoon is in the Pattern of 1777, however it most likely dates from the early Napoleonic period. It is all brass fitted, measuring 52 1/2 inches in overall length with a 38 inch barrel. Muskets like this were sent to Egypt in 1798 for the actions there, and then maybe supplied to North America for the 1812 war against Great Britain. These are very rare, and we have only seen a few over the years.
Brass mounted military weapons in France did NOT indicate Naval use as in Great Britain but meant the weapon was for Colonial issue. The musket is marked I & S on the lock plate, which is unfortunately a marking that we do not recognize. It is also numbered with serial number 19 on the barrel tang, side plate, trigger guard, all barrel bands, and even on the lock's frizzen.
The musketoon is in great shape, fully cleaned to put it in the best light. It has a lovely cheek rest carved into the left butt stock. It has the proper brass flash pan of the period, which was copied by the United States in their Springfield line of muskets. The lock functions, however it does not hold at half cock due to wear on the internal mechanism. Both sling swivels are present, as is the cleaning rod.
A very rare and interesting weapon that may very well have seen service on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. In lovely overall condition ready to display!
