Item Description
Original Item: Only one available. Marked on the lock plate with P.J. MALHERBE / A LIÈGE, this musket was originally made in Belgium under contract one of the then German States. This may very well have started life in 1820 as a Flintlock Musket, later converted to Percussion, as the lock definitely appears to have at one time had a frizzen and pan. Many such Muskets were imported by the Confederacy before the Civil War, and once the conflict was over they were then converted for Civilian use as a hunting gun, or for personal defense.
This example is in very nice condition, if only it was in it's original military trim! Brass trigger guard, barrel band and side plate the butt plate is iron. Still retaining its civilian wood ram rod with some very old wood loss in front of the lock plate. The barrel is in fact rifled, possibly post manufacture, and seems to have a pillar breech. Rifling is faint but clear, and the barrel is clean, with evidence of past corrosion.
In nicely matured condition, ready to display or restore!
