  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice service used genuine steel construction M34 "Square Dip" Police helmet, outfitted for German Pre-WWII City Police issue for a city that we have been unable to identify. The helmet is also a very early "commercial" M34. The helmet features a city crest to the front depicting two lions with a church in the center, in front of an eight-pointed star. The helmet has a period installed brass comb which shows heavy denting and wear. The leather chinstrap is held in one one side by a lovely wavy pattern city cockade that shows red, black, and red, which we have been unable to identify.

The city crest has been there for a long time and is certainly original, as is the cockade. The leather chinstrap shows heavy crazing and some cracking on the side without the cockade, so this helmet should not be turned upside down so as to not damage the chinstrap further. The exterior retains almost all of the original black paint, with some small scuffs and scratches and bits of oxidation peeking through. There is some heavy residue around the base of the comb, and it is a small bit loose.

The interior of the helmet shows a well-worn 9-tongue leather liner which is stamped twice with the logo of EREL, one of the most desirable makers of German headgear. A brand name of Robert Lubstein, which is actually just the pronunciation of the his initials RL. The liner still has all four liner split pins present, with their internal cork spacer washers although they are worn. The interior chinstrap is entirely absent, and all five of the leather "tabs" for the rear skirt are still present, but some of them show heavy wear and one is missing the tab at the end. The liner retains the tie string connecting them all, as well as the thick leather skull pad which does look to be detached a bit, but still sits well for display.

This is a truly outstanding and unusual example of a Commercial M34 Police helmet, which requires a great deal more research! Comes ready to display.
