Original German WWI Regimentally Marked French 1866 Chassepot Bayonet with Modified Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Captured after the Franco Prussian War of 1871 this "1867" dated French Chassepot bayonet was taken back to Germany and reissued for use by German Forces including the period of WWI.

For reference please see the excellent book GERMAN BAYONETS VOLUME III by J. Anthony Carter pages 209-228.

The original French scabbard has had the "goal post" frog attachment replaced with the typical German long frog stud and the bayonet has been stamped:

13.L.I.4.133

This marking indicates reissue to a LANDWEHR BATTALION.

The German modified scabbard is also German regimentally marked but the marking differs slightly and is difficult to fully read.

The original French markings indicate manufacture at St. Etienne in February 1867.

Offered in great collector's condition only the muzzle ringbolt is absent, this is a genuine rare German/French WW1 Bayonet seldom seen today.
