Original German WWII Bakelite Military Issue Carbide Trench Lantern - Waffenamt (WaA) Marked

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is very unusual and wonderfully represents the German's use of bakelite a pre-war plastic forerunner that was most often encounter in field phones, fuse containers and MG 34 butt stocks.

This carbide hand lantern is constructed of 90% bakelite, it features three glass window panes, a concave mirror, a folding bakelite carry handle and an aluminum belt hook which has a German WWII Waffenamt WaA750 inspector marking, which is associated with the cities of Braunschweig and Hannover. The bakelite is wartime marked by the manufacturer on the handle, with 2363 in a circle, next to 81 /12 and other symbols. There are mold numbers on other components as well.

The lamp measures approximately 11" x 4" x 5". And is in very good condition. All three glass windows are intact, and the burner system seems to be mostly intact as well, though the rear reflector has cracked due to age and heat exposure. There is also some type of black waxy substance that was applied to the nozzle for the flame. The front housing around the burner can still be removed if the spring latch on top of the water reservoir is pulled out. The bottom compartment to hold the calcium carbide (CaC2) and water (H2O) still unscrews, however the internal cone and conduit are missing.

Beautifully constructed and well designed this says a lot for German manufacturing skills during a difficult time. Extremely rare and ready to display!
