Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. The German invasion of Greece, also known as the Battle of Greece or Operation Marita (Unternehmen Marita), were the attacks on Greece by Italy and Germany during World War II. The Italian invasion in October 1940, which is usually known as the Greco-Italian War, was followed by the German invasion in April 1941. German landings on the island of Crete (May 1941) came after Allied forces had been defeated in mainland Greece. These battles were part of the greater Balkans Campaign of the Axis powers and their associates.
This is an excellent example of a completely original soft-laminated aviation map of Northern Greece and the Aegean Sea. As was done with many Luftwaffe Fliegerkarte, this map is is made of cloth, but was treated with some type of flexible protectant, and then sewn on top of a flexible rear plastic layer. Due to this the map is mostly waterproof and could be folded and unfolded many times without ripping. It also could be written on multiple times, with the markings later erased so it could be used again. Because of the period German lamination, this map is still in very nice condition and completely readable, though there are some tears where folds intersect.
The map does not have any date stamps visible, but that was not uncommon, as the edges were cut off during the lamination process. This 36 ¼" x 21 ⅜" map has roads, towns/cities, major highways, mountain ranges, bodies of water and other land identifiers featured on the map. It even shows what look to be period pencil markings going towards and around the island of Limnos.
The reverse side has a small 1: 500 000 aeronautical map of Europe, North Africa, and portions of Asia, Russia, and the Middle East. It shows a large Deutsches Reich (German Empire) covering present day Germany, Austria, parts of Poland, and so forth, so this is definitely a Wartime map.
