Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic and hard to find WWII German inert shell for the 7.5 cm KwK 40, the primary armament from 1942 onwards for the Panzerkampfwagen IV (Pz.Kpfw. IV), commonly known as the Panzer IV. The round is completely inert and void of any explosive content and cannot be rendered live again.
The round is in total compliance with the current BATF standards on inert ordnance and is not available for export.
Based on the 7.5 cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun, it was designed to compete with the 76.2mm main armament of the Soviet T-34 Tank. The gun was also used for the Sturmgeschütz III (F model onwards) and Sturmgeschütz IV tank destroyers/assault guns.
This example measures 31 inches in length, and is in "battlefield pickup" condition, so it does show surface oxidation throughout. The shell shows some past pitting, and the fuze does unthread, but a lot of effort is required to fully reseat it. The shell casing, originally plated steel, has lost most of the original plating, and also has some holes from scale rust, as well as one from what could be shrapnel or a large caliber bullet.
However, the markings on the base of the shell are still clear, and read:
duw
45
wa 4
6339St.
7.5cmKwK40
To the right of these there is also a Waffenamt WaAA10 inspection stamp clearly visible. The "duw 45" markings indicate 1945 production by Deutsche Röhrenwerke AG, Werk Thyssen in Mülheim an der Ruhr, a Pipe / Tube Factory known for producing shells for the 7.5cm KwK 40. The "wa 4" marking most likely indicates that the shell itself was made by HASAG-Eisen- & Metallwerke GmbH, previously known as Hugo Schneider AG, Abteilung Lampenfabrik, Leipzig. This company was a known producer of ammunition and shells during the war.
A very nice "battlefield pickup" example of a hard to find WWII Tank Shell, ready to display!
