Original German WWII POW Hand Carved Keepsake Box from Camp Opelika in Alabama with Provenance

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a lovely hand carved keepsake box, constructed and carved by a German P.O.W. kept at Camp Opelika in Opelika, Alabama. This World War II era prisoner of war (POW) camp began construction in September 1942 and shut down in September 1945. The first prisoners, captured by the British, were part of General Erwin Rommel's feared Africa Corps. It was one of these soldiers that carved this box, as per the provenance we received with it:

This hand carved Wooden Box with the 3rd Reich on lid was carved by a German P.O.W. at Camp Opelika and was given to Nurse at Camp who provided Medical Car to the P.O.W.'s. The P.O.W. was part of Rommel's troops captured in Lybia by British Troops.

The box itself measures approximately 10"W x 7 1/2"D x 3 3/4"H, and is constructed of dark hardwood, with a hinge closure on one side. The interior is lined with a yellow fleece type fabric material, though we do not know if this was added by the P.O.W. or afterwards. The top of the box has the German WWII Era Reichsadler (National Eagle), with the sides showing floral designs.

A great piece of military history, ready to add to your collection! P.O.W. made items are always very desirable and hard to find on the market.
