Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a tailor made WW2 German SA Sturmführer Berlin-Brandenburg Group officer tunic. Officers had to supply their own uniforms, and they were usually obtained from private tailors, as is the case here. This fine tunic is untouched, and in overall good condition.
Approximate measurements are:
Collar to shoulder: 10”
Shoulder to sleeve: 23”
Shoulder to shoulder: 18”
Chest width: 19”
Waist width: 18”
Hip width: 21”
Front length: 29"
The tunic itself is made of a heavy weight brown wool, that would have been appropriate for both field and service use. The front closes with four silvered pebbled buttons, typical for wartime manufacture. The collar tabs have black bases with silver piping which represents Berlin-Brandenburg Group (Berlin and western part of Brandenburg). On the left collar tab are three pips for the rank of Sturmführer (Lieutenant); the right tab is embroidered 28. There is no sign of previous tabs ever having been applied.
The officer shoulder boards are bullion wire rows and appear to be replacements but are period authentic. The exterior of this officer tunic is clean, retaining virtually all of the original wool nap, but does show area of mothing throughout. The left sleeve has an original SA armband. The french cuffs are surrounded with a silver bullion tape
The inside of this officer tunic is fully lined with artificial silk, as is typical, and exhibits lots of neatly done hand sewing. There is a machine embroidered tailor tag in the neck. This tunic makes for a fantastic display.
The Sturmabteilung, known by the initials “SA,” were the original paramilitary wing of the NSDAP. This organization was originally formed in 1921 and played a large role in the NSDAP ascendancy and rise to power from the 1920s through 1933. The organization had a system of ranks and was divided into units, in a manner similar to that of the military. As with all of the paramilitary organizations during the Third Reich, the SA wore uniforms and had their own distinctive badges, insignia and regalia. At the time of the NSDAP seizure of power in 1933, the SA had two million members. Following the Night of the Long Knives in 1934, and the arrest and eventual murder of SA leader Ernst Rohm, the size and influence of the SA decreased, but it continued to exist until the fall of Germany in May 1945. During WWII, the SA was involved with pre-military training, with the largest training unit, the SA-Marine, serving as an auxiliary to the German Navy. The SA even attempted to field a combat unit, at first as a Regiment, and eventually, an armored Korps- “Panzerkorps Feldherrnhalle.” The vast size of the SA at its height, and the length of time the SA was operational, created a vast range of different items of uniform, equipment, insignia, paperwork, etc., which is very collectible today.
