Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice service used example of a wartime production production 2nd Model Luftwaffe dagger, which looks to have seen use and service in the field. It is a fine Solingen-Produced example made by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. The celluloid grip of this 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger is a lovely caramel orange color, due to the fading of the material. It does have cracking and some small chunks missing near both the pommel and ferrule, and if it was originally wire wrapped, that is completely missing. The aluminum pommel is crisp quite nice, and is the type that was not antiqued or plated. The swas on both sides are bold, showing just a bit of wear and denting, and the oak leaves around it is raised out and heavily hand enhanced.
The hilt mounts are really very nice on this dagger. The crossguard is made of Aluminum, which was an "Air Age" material, which was used to make most airplanes. It was considered fitting and desirable for the eagle-shaped guard to be made of this material. The front side is an eagle with a breast and talon area that is vaulted out much more so than the crossguards seen on other types of daggers. This guard shows little wear and has excellent feathering on the eagle. The bird, of course, flies to the left and grasps a mobile swas in his talons. The reverse panel is decorated with small pebbling and still has a portion of the original factory blackening. There looks to be some initials scratched in, but we cannot read them. The ferrule looks to plated steel, and has a lovely oxidized patina, having lost much of the plating.
The blade on this example is not nickel plated, which is common for the 2nd model dagger blades. It unfortunately is stained throughout much of the surface, and looks to have seen use in service, as well as some cleaning. The edges were however not sharpened. We have left it in its present state to preserve the history of the piece.
This example was produced by Solinger Metalwaren-Fabrik Stöcker & Co. GmbH, also known as SMF, who were one of the major producers of this knife during WWII. Their "Seated King" over SMF / SOLINGEN trademark is seen on the reverse base of the blade. They were one of the major suppliers of edged weapons to the Luftwaffe during WWII. As the name implies, they were located in Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in Western Germany. For more information, please see J. Anthony Carter's fine work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS. Above the logo is a Weimar Eagle over 5, the standard Luftwaffe proof marking.
This scabbard is a fine, straight example, still retaining much of the original plating, and showing a lovely lightly worn patina. The aluminum bands are well defined and have outstanding hand enhanced oak leaves tipped at a 45 degree angle. The hanger rings however are aboth missing. The throat is retained by flush screws on either side.
This is a nice 2nd Model Luftwaffe Dagger by SMG, offered in very nice service used condition, ready to display!
