Item Description
Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a fantastic genuine WWII German Waffen SS Soldbuch, issued to ᛋᛋ-Rottenführer Martin Ebling. The front cover shows the ᛋᛋ doppelte Siegrune (Double Sig/Victory Rune) over Soldbuch zugleich Personalausweis (Pay Book and Identity Card). It features his photograph on the inside front cover, which has two Waffen-ᛋᛋ stamps, which give a partial unit designation as well: I. / Pz. Gren. Rgt. 1 / ᛋᛋ-Pzz-Gren. Div. Hitl. The rest is unfortunately too obscured to read.
The first page indicates number 3214, and gives Ebling's signature, and initial Dienstgrad (rank) of ᛋᛋ-Schütze. It then indicates that on 21. 6. 1944 he was promoted to ᛋᛋ-Sturmmann and again on 1. 5. 1945 to ᛋᛋ-Rottenführer. The next page indicates he was born 27. 3. 1926 in Kaiserlautern / Westmark, and that the book was issued 21. Juni. 1943. His initial posting was as part of the 2. / ᛋᛋ=Kraftf. A. u. E. Abt., or 2nd Company, SS Kraftfahrer Ausbildung und Ersatz Abteilung (Driver Training and Replacement Squad). Later it looks like Ebling became part of ᛋᛋ-Pz. Gren. Ausb. u. Ers. Btl. 12, or the 12th SS Panzergrenadier Training and Replacement squad.
Overall condition is good and many pages have handwriting or ink stamps, meaning this has some excellent research potential. These are exceptionally rare and difficult to find, especially Waffen SS books with links to a Panzergrenadier unit!
The SS (Schutzstaffel - 'Protection Squadron') was originally formed in 1925, ostensibly to act as a small, loyal bodyguard unit to protect the Führer, Adolf H. Under the direction of the Reichsführer-SS Heinrich Himmler, the SS grew to be the most ruthless and feared organization of the 20th century. They were the vanguard of NSDAP and eventually controlled nearly every function of German life and much of Occupied Europe.
When WWII began in earnest, the SS-Verfügungstruppe (SS-VT) (SS Dispositional Troops) became the Waffen-SS ("Armed SS"), an official military branch of the SS organization. Its formations included men from NSDAP ruled Germany, along with volunteers and conscripts from both occupied and unoccupied lands.
