Original Greek WWII Civil Ensign Flag - 69 x 33

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Brought back by a USGI after WW2 this is an incredible genuine 1930s Greek Civil Ensign (now the National flag of Greece) in multi-piece wool construction that measures  69 inches x 33 inches (175 cm x 84 cm).

The Greek Civil Ensign was used on merchant ships before and during WW2. However, the fact that these vessels were not of military association was of little protection for the crews as dozens of Greek ships were sunk by the German Kriesmarine and Luftwaffee during World War II. Such as the 1918-built Greek steamship GALAXIAS, owned by M. J. Lyras & Co., which was half-sunk at the port of Dieppe, France after being bombed on 23 May 1940 as well as the 1913-built Greek steamship GEORGE J. GOULANDRIS, owned by Goulandris Bros., was torpedoed and sunk on 29 June 1941 by U-66.

This rare genuine flag is offered in used by very good solid condition, colors are still vibrant with no rips or defects but plenty of WW2 era repairs.

A wonderful very hard to find flag, perfect for any Greek World War Two collection.
