Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. German soldiers often purchased elaborate regimental pipes in the pre-war era. These pipes were decorated with regimental insignia and are most often seen in early-war photographs, as they would be quite fragile in trench conditions. This is a wonderfully elaborate pipe marked as belonging to a Reservist (Officer) in the 62nd (East Frisisan) Field Artillery Regiment. The back of the porcelain bowl has what appears to be a roster of men along with the date 1908/10 at the bottom, most likely the years served with the unit.
This stunning pipe came to us from the American Armoured Foundation, Inc. Tank and Ordnance Memorial Museum. The AAF Tank Museum was a living memorial dedicated to the Tank and Cavalry soldiers of the world. Before 1981 some of the artifacts that make up the AAF Tank Museum was a private collection belonging to Mr. William Gasser. Mr. Gasser felt that his collection would be beneficial in educating present and future generations to the sacrifices made and the technologies gained during war. Therefore, in 1981 the AAF Tank Museum was established as a non-profit charitable organization, and Mr. Gasser's donated his private collection to the Tank Museum. Mr. Gasser is still active as Volunteer Director and Curator of the Tank Museum and his knowledge of military history has been a great asset to the museum. Unfortunately after 20 years of operation it had to close its doors, which is when this was acquired.
A porcelain pipe with multiple sections of the pipe stem, the most ornate of which is composed of sections of horn, tassels, and a Pickelhauben. The body is marked to the 62nd (East Frisisan) Field Artillery, “B” Battery. The porcelain bowl is dated 1908/10. Each piece is still able to be removed with ease and measures approximately 43 ½” in total length.
Overall excellent pre World War One Artillery Officer regimental tobacco pipe.
