Original Imperial German Private Purchase Bavarian Officer / NCO WWI M-1871 Mauser "Walking Out" Etched Parade Dress Bayonet by Weyersberg Kirschbaum with Scabbard

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Commonly referred to as a "walking out" Bayonet, this edged weapon was never designed to actually fit on any rifle, even the Mauser 1871 model after which it is named.

This is a lovely Dress or Parade Bayonet, worn only on ceremonial occasions and when going on leave. These usually have a higher quality finish than the issue M-71 Bayonet, and this example has a lovely etched blade. There are panels on both sides showing stands of arms, foliate designs, and more. The darkening in the panels has however worn, so it can be hard to see the etching. As is correct the bayonet's blade is fully blunt. We can see the original etched writing on the right side of the blade, which reads In Treue Fest, German for "steadfast in loyalty."

The reverse ricasso is stamped with the trademark "Knight's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) logo of legendary maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making. The traditional manufacturing of swords at WKC dates back to the year 1774 when the Weyersberg first registered the ''Kings head'' as their trademark. Later in 1883 the company merged with the Kirschbaums and the company WKC was formed as it exists today. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter’s work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS.

The hilt does not have an inlet leaf spring on the right side nor slot or button, so it is for decoration only. The "German Silver" cupronickel alloy crossguard has the usual "S" shape seen on these parade bayonets, and it does not have a muzzle ring.

Condition is very good, with a lovely patina on the brass, and a mostly bright finish on the blade, with areas of oxidation. The bayonet comes in good quality silver mounted leather scabbard and is a fine example with probably 125 years of age to it. It has shrunk a bit over time and is quite stiff, however it still correctly fits the blade with no issues. It is fitted into a brown leather frog.

Overall a good condition bayonet with some great display potential!
