Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good condition Imperial German Line Infantry enlisted man's Mannschaften (other ranks) EM/NCO pickelhaube, with a Kingdom of Bavaria Wappen. The M1915 was the last model of Pickelhaube issued prior to the move to all steel helmets. In accordance with the 1915 regulations these helmets would no longer would use brass, silver, or Tombak as the M1895 did. All issued Pickelhaube would now use grey oxidized steel fittings for all Regiments.
This helmet features a oxidized steel frontplate (wappen) with the crowned Bavarian coat of arms, flanked by two crowned lions, over the kingdom's motto, In Treue Fest, German for "steadfast in loyalty." The wappen is held in place with the correct leather wedges through the eyelets, though a piece of wire has been tied around both eyelets as well. Unfortunately the chin strap and both cockades (kokarden) are missing from around the chin strap mounting lugs.
The crown of this leather helmet displays a vented enlisted removable spike mount on an oxidized steel baseplate. The spike is in excellent condition, and is removable using the "bayonet-style" attaching system, though it is a bit fussy. It also has the correct "vent" on the rear support spine of the helmet.
The interior features a nice original leather liner, complete with the original leather tie strap, both in good condition with a light brown color and no major damage or tears. The size of the helmet is marked as 54 on the crown. Also painted on the inside are FAUCHEX and ANGERS, which are a French City Names, possibly the home French Soldier who brought this helmet back from the front. There is also a small maker mark with a 1916 date, and what looks like a name, but we cannot read it.
The black leather shell shows normal age crazing and wear, but no flaking or other major damage. The lacquer finished leather is in very good condition having no serious issues. There is also definitely some level of leather shrinkage due to age, which is why the some fittings are somewhat loose. The front leather visor is still attached, with loose stitching, but the metal trim has been almost completely removed. The metal spine that descends from the spike's baseplate to the edge of the rear visor is in very good condition.
Overall a very nice condition Imperial German pickelhaube from the Kingdom of Bavaria, a great addition to any collection.
