Original Item. Only One Available. This is the most amazing rank handle ersatz bayonet we have ever offered! It is a stunning DEMAG made example complete with much of its original green paint remaining on the handle, is maker marked on both sides of the blade, and has a PHENOMENAL ersatz scabbard with the normal leather securing strap replaced with paper-cloth! This was one of the rarest ersatz materials utilized by Germany during the war and to be in this condition despite its fragility is just stupendous.
The bayonet is a bit worn, and both maker’s marks are difficult to read, but they are undoubtedly for DEMAG, the original maker of this style. The handle retains about 75% of its green paint, and the scabbard retains about 60% of its black paint. The paper-cloth fittings on the scabbard are fragile, but are still complete and do function, but we would advise against buttoning and unbuttoning the snap repeatedly due to the fragility of the paper-cloth.
The bayonet has a short double edged dagger blade of 6", marked DEMAG / DUISBURG in a circle in front of the steel cross guard on the blade ricasso, although this is very faint. The reverse ricasso is marked GESETZLICH GESCHÜTZT indicates that the knife design is registered with the German Trademark office. These were produced by Deutsche Maschinefabrik A-G (DEMAG) of Duisburg as private purchase items.
The overall length is about 10 1/2 inches, and unlike most that we have seen, the blade has not been sharpened much or shortened. The unique "CRANK HANDLE" grip is constructed from two steel stampings riveted together, in the typical "Ersatz" (replacement) style of construction. This grip fits the standard Gewehr 98 (GEW 98) Mauser bolt action magazine Rifle carried by German Infantry throughout WW1.
This is a text example of one of the rarest ersatz materials put to use in a very unconventional way. This is the only example we have ever had, and we likely won’t have another. Don’t miss it!
