Item Description
Original Items: One of a Kind Set. This is a fantastic WWI Era Named Imperial German Police Officer's set, consisting of his Pickelhaube helmet, his service pistol holster, and TWO period photographs of him in uniform wearing the hat in this set. The holster is named on the inside with Herm. Weiß / Wittlich B/ Trier, which would most likely be for Hermann Weiß, and the town of Wittlich, located near Trier in the Rheinland area of Germany. Really a great set with lots of research potential!
The first picture measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", and shows Weiß in his police uniform with his holster in front of what looks to be some type of radio mast or other steel framed tower. The second picture measures 5 5/8" x 4", and is matted on cardboard. This looks to be Weiß's wedding picture, and he certainly looks sharp. The information on the back indicates that the company that matted it is located in Dornach, which was in the contested area of Alsace on the German French Border, today part of France.
The holster is the standard police type of the era, and most likely made to fit an early French or Belgian semi-automatic pistol or something similar. It has two magazine pockets, which are somewhat short, so it may be for an FN 1910. There were numerous pistols being released in the early 20th century. The holster is in brown leather and in good service worn condition, with a lovely patina.
The most impressive part of this collection is by far the Police Officer's Pickelhaube Helmet, which is almost certainly privately purchased. These show much more variation than the military issued versions, and this helmet is entirely fit with what looks to be Nickel Silver, often called "German Silver", and alloy of Nickel, Zinc, and Copper. It features the standard boiled leather construction, with a thick black enamel paint job, which has cracked and melted over the past 100 years. The front Wappen plate displays a large W for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and above this is the German Imperial State crown.
The helmet has metal trim around both the front and rear visors, and a lovely set of chin scales. The police top spike shows officer's perlring around the bottom, and is somewhat loose, though it does not unscrew from the top fittings. It also does look like two of the attachment bolts for the top fittings were replaced at some point, and they are the only magnetic parts on the helmet. There is a Black, White, and Red Reichskokarde around the right fitting, correct for an early 20th century helmet. The interior has a standard leather liner with a leather top strap attaching all of the "Fingers together. There are unfortunately no markings that we can see.
A really great early 20th century Imperial German Police Officer's Set, ready to research and display!
