Original Item: Only One Available. This is definitely something we haven't seen before! We have had many Military-Issue German Pickelhauben, but never a Police one! They are much rarer to see, as well as much more diverse, as every state and sometimes city could use a different design. Based on the side cockades and Wappen, we can definitively say that this example is from the City of Zittau, in what was the Kingdom of Saxony, near the Czech region of Austria-Hungary. The quality and chin scales indicate it was most likely a high ranking officer.
This helmet follows the typical design of a German Pickelhaube, made from boiled leather, which is then lacquered black. The fittings appear to all be made from German Silver, and are quite attractive, and in great shape. The front features a wappen (front plate) with a German Silver brass star, on top of which is a Brass coat of arms of the City of Zittau, which has a small shield bearing the Czech Lion and a Silesian Piast Eagle. In the middle is a "Z" for Zittau.
It also has correct kokarden (cockades) on both sides, green/white Saxon State kokarden on the right and Zittau (Red and White) on the left. Interior of the Pickelhaube is in very fine condition, exhibiting moderate use. It has a correct black leather liner, though the securing tie is missing. The black leather shell shows light age crazing and wear, but retains almost all of the lacquer. It still has the original high quality German Silver chin scales, which are in excellent condition. The top of the helmet has a cruciform spike base, with a ball-topped spike still firmly attached.
The front and rear visors are both German Silver trimmed, and have retained their shape very well. As is common on helmets of this age, the stitching for the visors has degraded and rotted out in places. The rear spine is undented, and there is minimal shrinking in the leather, another great aspect.
