Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. A very fine example of a field used Model 1915 Bavarian Enlisted Men's Greatcoat in Feldgrau and a Prussian Reserve Feldmütze. Absolutely one of the finest condition pieces of WWI Imperial German Feldgrau we have ever had.
Imperial German Feldgrau uniforms are incredibly hard to find, especially Enlisted Uniforms. Aside from the attrition of clothing worn in the trenches, much was burned as a result of the Spanish Influenza Pandemic and lice infestations. What survived was either worn out by veterans who repurposed their old uniforms as everyday clothing following the bleak years during the massive depression that raged throughout Germany, or, was simply repurposed or converted for use with the Reichswehr. It is for these reasons that on the collector’s market today Imperial German Officer’s uniforms are far more common than enlisted. While enlisted uniforms were either destroyed, worn out, or repurposed, officers' uniforms, on the other hand, were generally preserved by the veterans and their families, who could simply afford to do so.
This exceptional specimen is complete with all of its original painted buttons, however, most of the original paint is missing. It was never fitted with shoulder boards or loops. Exterior condition is very good, with only very minor mothing here and there. The collar appears to have been either a field replacement or a field repair, adding a lovely personal touch to the coat!
The Field Cap (Feldmütze or Krätzche) is a very nice example. It is constructed of gray/green "Feldgrau" wool with red cap band and red piping along with an interior linen lining. The front of the cap bears a Black and White kokarde (Prussia) on the front of the crown, with a Black and White Reserve Cockade on the cap band for the Kingdom of Prussia. This reserve cockade was used between 1897 and 1922 (WWI period), the Prussian Reserve Kokarde in Black, White & Black with cross. The Allerhöchste-Kabinetts-Ordre (All Highest Cabinet Order) directed the issue by the King of Preußen (Prussia). The cross says 'Mit Gott für König und Vat.(erland) 1813'. The motto is that of Friedrich Wilhelm III and was implemented in 1813.
The cap is in good used condition, with the expected wear and tear from having been through The Great War. There is some moth damage, and definitely discoloration, but it still presents very well. The interior lining is somewhat torn, but also has faded ink stamps as well as personalized stitching: Flemman 5/68. We believe this to be a name and unit, making this a wonderful research opportunity!
This is a lovely set of items that would display wonderfully together! Comes ready for further research and display!
