Original Imperial German WWI Fernglas 08 Field Glasses by Carl Zeiss dated 1917 with Neck Strap & Ersatz Case

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice set of Imperial German WWI Fernglas 08 (Remote Glass 08) or Field Glasses model 1908, made by the legendary Carl Zeiss company of Jena. These were one of the most used German issued binoculars of WWI. This example is fully functional, with mostly clear optics, and working focus adjustments. It is nicely marked as follows on the central hinge tension wheel with the maker and serial number:

Fernglas 08
Nr. 4628
CARL ZEISS
JENA

The field glasses are also marked VIII. 17 on the left side support arm, which we believe is the date of August 1917. The bakelite eye cups are in good condition, with some chips and cracks on the left cup. There is a nice leather neck strap installed, which is intact and supple, though definitely worn, and we do not recommend using it to hold the binoculars.

The included case is made of woven plant fibers, most likely jute or "papercloth", with leather and steel fittings. The inside of the top cover has instructions for the Fernglas 08 glued in place. The leather hinge is still present and functional, though definitely shows age and wear. The top closure straps are both broken off, with one included inside hte case. The shoulder strap is unfortunately missing.

Overall a very nice example of the classic eye piece for German infantry officers during WWI!
