Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a totally original authentic Imperial German WWI Naval Battle Flag, with a large Balkenkreuz (Beam Cross) in the field, with a circle around the Imperial German Eagle at the intersection of the cross. The canton of the flag contains the imperial state colors and the Prussian Eisernes Kreuz (Iron Cross). The flag is made of cotton or linen, the standard material for flags of the period.
The flag header is thick canvas, and is marked Gaffel Flg. 1,2 x 2m, indicating the size and use of the flag. The "Gaffel" or Gaff, a spar to which the head of a fore-and-aft sail is bent. On non sail ships this then became part of the standard three-part flag pole, so this is a flag that would have flown to the side and below the main flag.
In very nice condition, this flag has had some repairs made over the years, and is somewhat discolored overall. It also appears that at one time it was hung up using thumbtacks through the header, as indicated by the regular circular rust stains.
This flag is one of the most attractive issued during WWI, and would make a very impressive display piece.
