Original Imperial German WWI U-Boat Submarine Donation Armband - dated 1917

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. On February 1, 1917, the German Empire began "unrestricted submarine warfare", which led to the United States entering the war on April 6, 1917. In order to provide financial support for the expansion of the submarine fleet, which was still insignificant at the beginning of the war, a nationwide collection of donations was held from June 1 to 3, 1917. People who donated were awarded with a small badge, or with armbands such as this.

The armband has an anchor insignia in the middle, with a U on top, to signify Unterseeboot (Under Sea Boat or Submarine), with U.-BOOT-SPENDE OPFERTAG 1.-3. JUNI 1917 around the outside. This translates to "U-Boat Donation Offering Day 1-3 June 1917". This same marking is replicated in larger print around the central insignia.

The armband is made from oil cloth, and is in good service used condition. It measures 15" x 3 7/8", and is sewn together in the back. Along the seam is a maker mark for HEINRICH TIMM. BERLIN.

Very interesting an ready to add to your Great War collection!
