Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a rare fully functional intricate Japanese WWII hand-cranked air raid siren, with fold out legs. It is definitely larger than the hand held type, and meant to be standing on the ground when used. A good amount of the original olive brown paint finish has flaked off from the aluminum body, but is present in the more recessed areas. It has a fantastic data plate with Japanese Kanji date and serial number is mounted to the top.
The date is in the standard long form indicating years into the current emperor's reign: 昭 和 十 九 年 五 月. This would be read: SHOWA (current reigning emperor) Juu Kyuu Nen (19th year of reign - 1944) Go Gatsu (5th Month - May). Below this is the serial number: NO 3536.
The wood handles are in good worn condition, with some cracking and small chips, but nothing major. The folding crank handle works properly, and the top handle still moves correctly, opening and closing the openings over the siren rotor. The siren mechanism works perfectly, and is quite loud when cranked up to full cycle with the sides fully open.
This type of siren is rather large, with a 9 inch siren rotor, and standing 22 inches tall when opened, measuring 14 inches between the legs. It folds up nicely to be 11 inches across, 8 inches wide, and 12 inches tall. The original leather carry handle is still present, though somewhat worn and delicate. The retaining pins for the leg hinges are both present, and fully workable.
Offered in complete and very good condition. These were used during the Air Raids over Tokyo and other major Japanese cities towards the end of World War Two.
