Original Indian Wars U.S. Model 1885 Cavalry Carbine Sling Belt with Swivel

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. Indian War U.S. Army Model 1885 Cavalry Carbine Belt with correct “improved” narrow swivel. The Carbine Belt is essentially a singlepoint sling used to shoulder the mounted trooper’s carbine while on horseback. The Model 1870 and 1885 Carbine Swivel loop is narrower than the more often found Model 1855 Swivel as used during the American Civil War. These belts were used to sling the carbine over the trooper's shoulder when mounting a horse. Once mounted, the carbine was unslung from the shoulder and positioned at the trooper's side with the barrel held in position on the saddle by means of a leather thimble. The sling was a necessity for the cavalryman. It allowed him to mount his horse with ease, kept the carbine close at hand while riding, and acted as a lanyard of sorts when engaged in horse mounted combat.

Original iron swivel is unmarked, which is not uncommon for the Model 1885 Swivel. Leather sling is still pliable, but is somewhat dry and shows signs of cracking and crazing. This does not detract from the appearance of the piece overall, and it displays very nicely despite this!

This fantastic piece of Old West history is a “must have” for the collector of early American military accouterments and U.S. Cavalry material. A perfect accompaniment to a model 1873 Trapdoor Springfield Carbine.
