Original Italian Early Modelo 1871 Cavalry Saber with Scabbard by Solingen Based German Maker Alexander Coppel

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a first for us here at IMA! This is a beautiful, German made Italian Modelo 1871 Cavalry Saber by Alexander Coppel. This example has a straight pipe back blade, although many had curved sabre blades, and was made by Alexander Coppel, in Solingen. It’s from the late 19th century, most likely the later 1870s to early 18880s. These swords were also seen having been utilized during WWI but exhibited a blued finish, unlike this one which is still in original configuration.

The blade ricasso is maker marked ALEXANDER COPPEL / SOLINGEN, around the trademark "Scales" logo, indicating manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This company made large amounts of export bayonets during the 19th century, and also manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. Sadly, as the Coppel family was Jewish, they saw their company stolen from them and "Aryanized" during WWII by the NSDAP. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter’s work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS.

This example is in very good condition and shows little sign of having been used. The blade still has the factory blunt edge, and is in excellent condition, with just a few small dents on the unsharpened edge. The original factory final grind marks are fully visible, and there is just a bit of light staining keeping this blade from being mint.

The hilt and scabbard, exposed to the air and elements, have fared a bit worse, with the scabbard showing an overall gray patina, with some pit rusting on the bottom of the drag, most likely from contact with a damp floor. The hilt has a similar gray patina, with some light rust on the pommel cap. The wire wrapped leather grip is in very good condition, showing only light wear, though it was damaged a bit on the back.

A very nice example of an Italian M1871 Heavy Cavalry Saber, contract made in Germany during the late 19th century. Ready to display!
