Item Description

Original Italian WWI French Made M1916 Adrian Helmet with 47th Infantry Crowned Stencil On Front - Complete

Original Item: Only One Available. Excellent genuine World War I Model 1916 Italian Army "Adrian" helmet, which was produced under contract by the French. These early war contract helmets are essentially identical to the regular French M1915 Adrian helmets, however they were painted green, instead of the "Horizon Blue" that the French used, though the original blue can be seen beneath. Later Italy would produce its own simplified version, which featured a welded-on comb and single piece shell.

The helmet retains the original horizon blue paint on the interior, while the exterior was painted with an OD green type paint. The paint has been retained quite nicely, but the original French Horizon Blue can be seen where the paint has chipped. The shell also exhibits tell tale signs of seeing extensive use, such as a “pock” mark on the front right that may have been caused by either a ricochet or shrapnel.

Features a wonderful complete original brown leather liner with wool backing behind the liner band which is partially detached and torn. Offered in overall very good condition, with complete leather chinstrap. Shell shows some minor dings, scratches and paint chips consistent with age. Ready to display!

The M15 Adrian helmet (French: Casque Adrian) was a combat helmet issued to the French Army during World War I. It was the first standard helmet of the French Army and was designed when millions of French troops were engaged in trench warfare, and head wounds from the falling shrapnel generated by the new technique of indirect fire became a frequent cause of battlefield casualties. Introduced in 1915, it was the first modern steel helmet and it served as the basic helmet of many armies well into the 1930s. Initially issued to infantry soldiers, in modified form they were also issued to cavalry and tank crews. A subsequent version, the M26, was used during World War II.
