Original Japanese WWII Gas Mask with Labeled Filter Canister

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good condition genuine WWII issue Japanese rubberized face mask with metal rimmed lenses, complete with filter canister. There were many different revisions made during the Pre-WWII and early war years, as well as manufacturing design differences, so positive identification can be different. These versions also were available with a directly attached filter, or a larger filter on a hose. There were also Military, Civic Defense, and Civilian versions, which could often be used interchangeably, further muddying the waters, so to speak.  As best we can tell, this looks to be a type 91 or 95.

This particular design has a bakelite filter housing, which has the exhale valve on the back. The air intake goes directly into "Tissot" tubes, which direct the air right onto the lenses, to help with fogging, a common issue for all gas masks. The lenses are retained by fixed clamped lenses, one of which has a good amount of age cracking, and both are yellowed from age. They are thick lenses, and solidly attached. The rubberized canvas of the mask unfortunately has degraded, a common occurrence during the 70+ years since it was produced. The canvas straps are all intact, and the buckles have minimal rust.

The filter can is in good shape, with minimal dents and rust, and still has the paper label on the front, as well as stamped markings in the metal on top. The paper label unfortunately has degraded a bit however, and the original bottom stopper is missing.

These are always difficult to find in any condition, much less with almost all the parts.
