Original Japanese WWII Imperial Japanese Army Service Photo Album - 64 Photos

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind-set. Here we have a wonderful personal photo album with some professional shots as well as personal snapshots, many of which show members of the Imperial Japanese Army often in the field. There are also a good number of company or platoon photographs. These are held in place for the most part by glue, and while a total of sixty-four photographs still fill this album, we can tell that there once many more. The "Onion Paper" dividers show clear markings where photos were in the past, some of which were definitely removed forcefully, tearing the corners.

As with the German photo albums we see, the first few pages (the album is read right to left) are filled with pictures of important figures in WWII Japan. The first page we see actually has one visible date, from the MEIJI period, about 1882 in the Western calendar. The next page shows the Showa Emperor Hirohito and his wife Empress Kōjun. On the reverse we see his parents, Taishō Emperor Yoshihito and his wife Empress Teimei on the bottom, and his grandparents Emperor Meiji and Empress Dowager Shōken. Following this are other pictures of military leaders. After this it is mainly service photographs.

We also have noted that almost ALL of the thin paper separators have Japanese writing on them, often a SUBSTANTIAL amount. We have not been able to translate any of these, as many are in flowing script. This album would make an incredible translation project for those who can read pre-1946 Japanese writing.

Historical records like this album have become priceless time capsules that provide an incomparable level of insight into the individual experience of the Second World War, now that over seventy years have passed.
