Item Description
Original Item: One of a Kind. Now this is something we do not see every day. Made by the KAYABA SEISAKUSHO (Factory) between 1930 and 1945, only 5,100 of these very scarce three barreled flare pistols were made, most all for the Imperial Japanese Navy. Twice as many of the double barreled versions were made. This example is marked on the top of the top barrel with the Kayaba logo which is followed serial number 1251 and then by the naval Anchor proof. P.A.T. 63006 is stamped on left side of the frame. This same serial number is stamped on the bottom of the barrel assembly, the ejector, and on both parts of the breech latch. This example does not look to have had any parts swapped out, making it a very desirable "All Matching" example.
The 26.5mm barrels are each 3" in length, the pistol 7" in overall length and because of its large grip 8" tall. This example still retains the original blued finish, and was not repainted during or post war. The painted colors on the barrels indicate which color flares were to be loaded, and the white and red/yellow barrels still have great paint. The barrel with the grain paint has for some reason lost more paint, possibly due to contact with the scabbard.
The pistol is really in good shape, having been arsenal re-finished during the war. The wooden grip panels are 100% complete, with just a bit of wear and a great finish. The pistol breaks open, cocks, and dry fires correctly on all three barrels, and the safety switch is functional as well. This definitely is one of the best examples that we have ever handled.
The flare pistol comes complete with its extremely rare original substantial brown leather holster, which still retains both belt loops, though the shoulder strap is entirely missing. The holster itself is in wonderful condition, despite the missing strap. It was originally finished in brown, which has worn away in some spots. The holster flap is secured by a leather strap that passes through a loop secured to the holster body.
Japanese three barrel flare pistols are themselves rare, but with the holster they are like hen's teeth. Ready to display!
