Item Description
Original Items: One-of-a-kind-set. This is a true US soldier's bring back collection from World War Two. It is contained in a box measuring 4 3/8" x 3 5/8" x 2 1/8", which has Japanese writing on the outside, as well as the inside. We cannot tell if it was just made from pieces, or whether it is some type of original issue box.
The lid has a "FIRST CLASS" stamp on the label on top, and underneath the label is the name PFC. AARON LEDBETTER, as well as his address information. A small note inside the box indicates that the items were "ALL REMOVED FROM A DECEASED JAPANESE SOLDIER AND SENT HOME", though we have no way of definitively proving this. There are "dog tags" mentioned on the paper, but these are definitely not in the box. Definitely a fantastic research opportunity!
The wonderful set is comprised of the following:
- One Japanese WWII Leather Pouch Wallet, with a metal star on the front. Measures 3 1/2" x 2 1/4"
- One "AERIAL GUNNER" banner, most likely for a U.S. Medal.
- Two WWII Japanese Empire Paper Money Notes
- A Piece of currency from the Netherlands
- Five Japanese Occupation Period Philippino Paper Bills, 2 5 Peso and 3 100 peso.
- Coins collected from the Pacific theater and elsewhere. These include:
- 13 WWII Era Japanese Coins of Various Denominations.
- Two older British Coins, one from Queen Victoria's Reign dated 1876, and one from Edward VII's reign dated 1909.
- 6 WWII era coins from New Zealand.
- 2 U.S. Pennies from the interwar period, with holes in the top.
- One 1944 dated U.S. Philippines ONE CENTAVO coin, made for the eventual U.S. invasion of the Philippines.
- One Canadian One Cent coin dated 1940.
- One 1943 dated Australian Three Pence coin.
- One 1920 dated Italian coin.
- Two 1930s Mexican 5 Centavo coins
This is a great start to any WWII Japanese collection, with some very good research potential!
