Original Magnificent British Brass Barreled Blunderbuss by Vernon Marked "For His Majesty's Shore Revenue" Around The Muzzle - dated 1761

Item Description

Original Item: One of a Kind. This MAGNIFICENT piece is probably one of the most interesting and best condition British Government Blunderbusses that we have ever encountered! It is fitted with a lovely brass swamped barrel of 13 1/2" in length, marked LONDON and OLIVER'S AYT next to a FULL engraved British Royal Coat of Arms across the barrel. The barrel is also marked with the standard proof marks of the time, including a makers mark, and the CROWN / GP Gunmaker's and CROWN / V Viewed proofs from the London Proof house.

The most important marking however is marked on the end of the barrel:

FOR HIS MAJESTY'S SHORE REVENUE

This way you knew exactly who you were dealing with, should this have been brought to bear on someone.

The lock on this blunderbuss is a correct early "banana shape" type with a single screw behind the hammer and no frizzen reinforcement bridle on the pan. It marked with CROWN / G.R. under the hammer for King George III, and a CROWN / BROAD ARROW "Lock Viewer's" mark under the pan. The tail is maker marked and dated VERNON / 1761. We were unfortunately unable to locate information on the gunmaker Vernon, however we previously had a Brown Bess dated 1761 from this maker. We have also seen several other examples of flintlocks in the same type period from this maker, one from 1758, one from 1760, two others from 1761, and one dated 1762.

Measuring 28 1/2 inches in overall length, blunderbuss has a lovely honey colored walnut stock with a raised Brown Bess style side plate. In about as good a condition showing just a few long dead traces of worm holes around the wrist. The hammer action is strong, and the lock holds correctly at half-cock. The blunderbuss still has the original brass tipped cleaning rod, with the other end having the screw "worm" unloader still attached.

A sound and most compelling Blunderbuss dated 1761, in excellent working condition with a fantastic look! What a great gun to research, ready to display in spectacular condition!
