Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This fine musket was most likely made in Birmingham for England's oldest European Ally, Portugal, for a contract issued originally by the Portuguese King DON PEDRO III. He came to the throne in 1777 but died prematurely in 1786. The contract was filled over years, in fact over decades right up to the time of Portugal's war, with Napoleon known as the PENINSULA WAR, which concluded in 1813/14.
This particular Brown Bess is slightly smaller than the standard British line issue having a 36 1/2" barrel rather than 39" and the lock has a length of just 6" as opposed to 6 3/4". The bore is slightly smaller than the standard .75" at .67”. The mounts are all standard early third model style, indicating manufacture to have been in the late 1790s. The lock plate is marked P1o indicating King Pedro III.
Typically British in style and design at first glance, the only difference is that the brass side plate is of pistol design and the clearly fully intended, slight downsizing of the musket. Condition is very nice, with a nice stock, and just some light speckling on the barrel. The Barrel is marked on the left side with with the "Crown over Crossed Scepters" of Thomas Ketland of St Catherine St, Weaman Row Birmingham, who worked 1766 to 1810. This was later adopted as the mark of the Birmingham Proofhouse.
Being England's old ally when Napoleon invaded both Spain and France England sent Arthur Wellesley later the Duke of Wellington to lead the allied armies of Portugal, England and the free Spanish volunteers to evict the French. This took five hard years from 1808 until 1813.
A fine example of a British Ally's Contract Brown Bess Musket in display condition!
