Original Napoleonic Era Swedish-made Brown Bess Flintlock with British Proof Marks

Item Description

Original Item. Only One Available. During the war torn reign of King George III (1760 - 1820) supplies of muskets were acquired by Great Britain from all over Europe from various contractors. The best known are those supplied by Belgium, Holland and Germany. Here is an example made in Sweden, possibly as late as the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

At first glance it could be confused with a British made musket but one quickly realizes that this is not the case. The most obvious difference is the fact that the flash pan is in fact detachable, something the British did not do. The lock is plain but the barrel and brass mounts do have markings which also are not British. The 39" barrel does carry British Proof Marks, but that only confirms it as having been in Britain at some time.

Perhaps it was a "sample" shipped over to see if the British Government might order more from Sweden. The trigger guard is the 2nd Model "acorn" type and it bears the long 2nd Model side plate as well with the tail at the rear.

A rare and most unusual musket in very fine condition!
