Item Description
Original Item. Only One available. First introduced in 1859, this bayonet was then used with the M-1860 Infantry Rifle, the 1867 Remington Rifle and the 1876 Krag Pertersson rifle, only requiring slight modifications to fit each. While the rifles became obsolete, the same is not true for bayonets, so they were often refitted to fit the next generation of firearms. And once the service life was over, many sword bayonets were then converted for parade or field use, as they were still perfectly serviceable as edged weapons.
With a heavy blade of over 22" and overall length of almost 28", this is a very impressive bayonet! The brass hilt has been reconditioned, and the original grips were removed, and the channels for the spring and bayonet catch have been filled in with soldered brass and steel. It then had new grips attached, which are in very good shape. It has a simple brass crossguard with muzzle ring, and a single fullered slightly curved "Yataghan" saber blade. The ricasso is marked both sides with maker and proof marks.
It comes complete with its heavy leather scabbard with internal brass bottom mount and internally mounted frog loop. This is in good condition, and has had the original brown leather finish covered with a gloss black finish for parade use.
Very unusual and ready to display!
