Item Description
Original Items: Only One Set of 2 Available. This is a lovely matched pair of OTTOMAN Turkish flintlock horse pistols made to follow European lines, with beautifully carved wood stocks and embossed and decorated brass fittings.
The butt caps have the usual long ears, and the trigger guards go almost all the way to the butt cap. The side plates are quite long and extensively embossed. At one time both had decorative escutcheons on the back of the wrist, but one is now missing. The line engraved locks are nicely decorated with floral designs, and both have lovely swan neck cocks. The pistols measures 23" in over all length, and the barrels measure 15 1/2" long. There is some light engraving near the breech, however due to wear we cannot make out any names or designs.
Copying the western Style, the pistol displays a "faux" ramrod which is not intended for use, in this case carved into the wood. However even with this it still has two ramrod pipes to complete the look. The actual ramrods were usually carried on a leather thongs carried around the neck, so that it could not be dropped during reloading on horseback.
Both locks function, however the springs are very strong, so they need a strong pull to cock them, and also require a heavy trigger pull. As far as we can tell both hold correctly at half cock, and fire at full.
Overall condition of both show some lovely service wear, Both have minor issues such as small missing chunks of wood and/or the brass fittings, but no major defects.
A great looking set of Ottoman Horse Pistols, in fine working order and ready to display!
