Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good condition, turn of the century pickelhaube-style German Fire helmet, with a boiled leather body, German silver front plate (wappen), German Silver central comb, and brass & German Silver fittings. Central plate has a shield with the the ancestral and core coat of arms of Nassau, which formed the heart shield of the greater coat of arms. It is almost identical to the coat of arms of the Netherlands and is also included as the third and fourth field in the coat of arms of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. Next to the coat of arms is the standard emblem for German Firefighting units. At the top of the shield is the area designator: NASSAUISCHER / FEUERWEHR VERBAND which translates to Nassau Fire Brigade Association. At the bottom of the Wappen is a scroll with the German Fireman’s motto GOTT ZUR EHR - DEM NÄCHSTEN ZUR WEHR which means "Honor God - Defend your neighbor (against fire)."
Full leather lining is still mostly intact with one finger missing. The chinstrap is thick leather which has stood the test of time and wear. The sides retain the correct Prussian black and white cockades.
Condition overall is very good, and this configuration was typical of the 1890-1910 period. Interior crown has two original comb anchors secured under the bolts for the top comb. There are no other markings inside the helmet.
This is an unusual and very attractive item. Offered in very good condition. Size is not marked but we estimate it to be 54-56 cm.
