Original Pre-WWI U.S. Army Model 1889 Summer Tropical Sun Helmet

Item Description

Original Item: One Only. Much like our European cousins in the 1880s, the U.S. Army started to adopt sun helmets, especially for use during the hot summer months. These saw active service in the Spanish American War of 1898, especially in the tropical climate in Cuba. While often called "Pith Helmets", the U.S. variety was usually made of cork material.

This helmet dates to just after the conflict, probably during the first 10 years of the 20th century. It has a lovely light khaki color exterior, with the correct 4 panel construction and top vent cover. It looks to have had a front plate at one point, but it has now been removed.

The interior is lined with green fabric under the brim, with khaki fabric inside the crown. The leather sweatband is still fully intact, and is still quite soft but slightly torn. There are no marking and a large portion of the green fabric is torn away and missing. There is also a lot of structural damage and cracking in the brim. There is no size marked on the interior, but it is probably measures about a 7 1/8 in size.

Overall condition is fair, but does show staining to the exterior, as well as oxidation to the fittings. The original chin strap is completely missing but both hooks on the inside are present.
