Original Prussian Percussion Dragoon Pistol Converted from Flintlock with Chinese Legation Marking

Item Description

This is a classic Prussian Dragoon Pistol that most likel started life as a flintlock manufactured in the 1820s, but was converted to percussion in the 1840s like many other flintlocks. All brass mounts, the lock still bearing the maker's Arsenal marking for SPANDAU outside BERLIN. The Prussian Spread Eagle traditionally on the lock plate is almost complete gone due to powder burn corrosion, which has has also taking a large amount of material around the rear of the barrel near the nipple that holds the percussion cap. The iron work all with evidence of severe old pitting now all cleaned away, leaving the scars.

The most interesting feature of this pistol are the CHINESE characters on the left side of the wood stock opposite the lock. This rather indicates that this Pistol saw service with the PRUSSIAN LEGATION perhaps in Peking or at the Prussian trade center in South Western China. You remember the Movie 55 DAYS AT PEKING with David Niven, Ava Gardner and Charlton Heston, who of course saves the day. This Movie portrayed what happened in the BOXER REBELLION around 1900 but ended up being the Conclusion of the OPIUM WARS the European Powers had been fighting in China since 1860.

With all solid brass mounts and large iron lanyard ring to the bottom of the grip this Dragoon Pistol has certainly seen action. The ironwork pitted and Battle scarred, the woodwork and brass mounts mostly excellent. The lock functions but the tumbler is worn, so it does not hold at half cock when the trigger is pulled, and the full cock position often will not hold.

Fully Cleaned and ready to display!
