Original Rare British Sea Service Brown Bess Musket Circa 1765-1769

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very rare and unusual musket. It started life with a 42" barrel but was shortened to 39.5. The full length wood fore-end was never fitted with a brass nose cap and finished 1/8" shy of the barrel muzzle.

There are three brass ramrod pipes including a throat pipe which is unusual for a Naval musket. The side plate is classic early "flat" pattern with tail to rear. The trigger guard has correct "ball" front for naval long arms and the brass butt plate is the plain "folded over" style secured by three screws. Barre has a square tang and multiple English proof marks.

The lock mechanism is marked with Crown over "G.R." and TOWER across the tail. The lock is prior to the 1777 model in that there is only one visible bolt behind the cock. There never were any sling swivels, another Naval requirement.

A very early British Naval Brown Bess which started life as a 42" model and was later shortened to 39.5 but never to the later 37" standard. Rare and fascinating!
