Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a supremely RARE militia officer’s sword, circa 1840-1850. It features Original mother of pearl grips that have a nice hue to them and are free from most cosmetic issues, save for a little separation on some of the edges. Copper wire wrapping is fully intact with no fraying.
The hilt features a decorative knight’s head pommel, ornate hand guard, quillion, and one-sided “Shell” rainguard/chappe with loads of hand enhanced designs. The fittings are all of brass and bear few blemishes or patina issues, and still have a lot of the original gilding present. There is a little play in the rainguard but it does not come free.
The blade is engraved, but due to wear and aging it is not only hard to determine the precise pattern, as well as the maker mark. It is BELIEVED to be made by the esteemed William H. Hortsmann of Philadelphia, or by Ames, who was responsible for producing a great number of swords in America during that time. There are no issues with chips or cracks to the blade, and it is primarily free of major rust issues. The spine of the blade shows that it was originally a beautiful blue / purple 'Fire Blued" color in many areas, a popular color of the time, which is quite sought after. It has been previously coated in the corrosion inhibitor, cosmoline, and there may be some stains from residue present.
The scabbard is gilded brass and shows in some spots throughout. There are a few noticeable dents on the scabbard, but it does not interfere with the sword going in or out. Scabbard’s two bands and hanger rings are intact. One side of the body features an engraved detail pattern.
Rare swords like these are getting harder and harder to come buy, and would make a great addition to the mantlepiece or as a conversation starter.
