Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. A Magnificent French Model 1822/99 Light Cavalry Sword, signed on the back of the blade and arsenal marked with intricately detailed bronze hilt, originally, most probably, all mercury gilt now evaporated away.
The Pommel and back strap of the hilt in the form of an Eagle with a molded five bar guard covered in foliate designs. A royal crown pommel escutcheon above a royal crown over what appears to be an "M.C." monogram mounted on shield on the back strap.
The longettes on either side of the blade are also embossed with crown over full Coat of Arms on one side and crown over intertwined back to back letter "C" and the Roman Numeral I on the other for King Carol 1st. of ROMANIA.
Romania was part of the Turkish Ottoman Empire until 1878 and it's first King born, as Prince Carol of Hohenzollen-Sigmaringen was offered the throne in 1881.
Romania as a Nation has been very closely allied with France and it is no surprise that such a sword as this was made in France, by such a prestigious maker for the Romanian Royal Household.
The Sword has a 35-inch blade and the grip is covered in wire bound sharkskin, the scabbard is absent.
The signature on the blade is marked; H.FARVE LE PAGE, Rue Richelieu, Paris probably France's most prestigious gun maker and supplier of military accouterments of the period.

Presumably some member of the Romanian royal household may have been studying artillery with the French Military sometime shortly after the turn of the Century. Who knows which means this offers masses of research possibilities!
