Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice condition WWI era Russian leather ammo pouch, intended to hold loaded 5 round stripper clips for the M1891 Mosin-Nagant Rifle. From the age and style of the pouch, we believe it to be Imperial Russian Issue from the WWI era. It then stayed in service into the Soviet era, and was modified in the 1930s with the addition of a D-Ring to interface with combat suspenders.

We have found references to specifications from the early 1930s that mention infantry and cavalry type pouches, and a shoulder strap for cavalry pouches, though unfortunately no pictures or diagrams have been found. What we do know is that during late 1935 and early 1936 changes occurred in Red Army equipment, and pouch was modified with D ring. Those pouches already made were modified by fitting a D-ring, as we believe this one was. The style of leather and rivet material is different from the rest of the pouch, which has the early issue brass side studs.

Otherwise, the design is still the same as the pouches issued from 1891 through WWI. It has two side closure straps, and belt loops on the back. There is an internal separator for the two pouches, which hold 3 loaded stripper clips each. It measures 5 3/4"W x 3 1/2"H x 2". The pouch is somewhat "V" shaped, to keep the stripper clips from moving around in the pouch.

Condition is good, but it definitely does show age and use. It looks to have been coated with a waxy preservative, which is present on the inside and outside of the pouch. The stitching for the center separator has come undone somewhat, so it is not securely attached anymore. The rest of the stitching appears solid.

It is one of the most mass-produced military bolt-action rifles in history with over 37 million units produced since its inception in 1891, and in spite of its age it has shown up in various conflicts around the world until the modern day, being plentiful, cheap, rugged and effective, much like the AK-47 and its variants.
