Original Item: Only One Available. This is a wonderful example of a Spanish-American war era Spanish M1895 Mounted Troops Saber by the world renowned Toledo Arms Factory. Toledo steel, historically known for being unusually hard, is from Toledo, Spain, which has been a traditional sword-making, metal-working center since about the Roman period, and came to the attention of Rome when used by Hannibal in the Punic Wars. It soon became a standard source of weaponry for Roman legions. Toledo steel was famed for its high quality alloy.
As with most militaries around the world, sword models came in different variations; officers, NCOs, enlisted and so on. This example however is a “Troopers” saber, a regular enlisted one, with plain walnut checked grip scales. The blade measures 32” on length with a false edge running ⅓ of the blade towards the tip. It has been told that these swords had an impeccable temper and could bend almost up to 90 degrees and return to their original form, for obvious reasons we have not tested this out. The blade is slightly curved, giving it the standard “slashing” appearance of most cavalry sabers. The marking on the ricasso is still mostly clear:

The guard is rather robust with a half bowl guard on top with an upturned quillon, which most have been seen to have been flattened while in service, this one escaped that fate. The grip is made from lovely walnut and was given a checked pattern to allow the user to better grip the weapon while using it in inclement weather.
The 33 ½” scabbard is in similar, service worn condition and is still relatively straight. The scabbard still retains its single hanging ring and nearly all of the original finish and or paint is missing, giving the steel a lovely aged appearance.
A great addition to any edged weapons collection. Comes more than ready for further research and display.
