Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is an extraordinary item. It appears to be Spanish but we feel this was made in Spanish North Africa following the Spanish style of perhaps the late 1600's. It is huge, measuring 19" in overall length with a swamped toward the muzzle barrel of almost 11". The barrel is fully inlaid with heavy silver scroll decoration and there some decoration on the lock which appears to bear an ARMOR'S MARK.
The massive wood stock is magnificently inlaid with masses of Silver wire with great quality craftsmanship. The Trigger guard and ramrod pipes appear to be Silver also. A choice item that just lacks the final European Gunsmith's touch, which is confirmed by the bore being off center. If Spanish made it would be in the region of a $ 5,000.00. 17th Century pistol, however as a Spanish Colonial 18th Century pistol.
Very Impressive and ready to display.
History of the Miquelet Lock:
Miquelet lock is a modern term used by collectors and curators, largely in the English-speaking world, for a type of firing mechanism used in muskets
and pistols. It is a distinctive form of snaplock, originally as a flint-against-steel ignition form, once prevalent in Spain, Portugal, Italy, the Balkans, North Africa, Ottoman Empire and throughout Spain's colonies from the late 16th to the mid 19th centuries.
The term miquelet lock was not recorded until the 19th century, long after the appearance of the mechanism in the 16th century, and is of uncertain origin. One commonly held view is that it was coined by British troops in the Peninsular War to describe the style of musket used by the Miquelet (militia) that had been assigned to the Peninsular Army of the Duke of Wellington.
