Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice 19th Century Swedish Model 1859 Infantry Officer's Sword, with a lovely etched 32 1/2" inch long "Pipe backed" blade, also called the "Quill Back" or "key hole shape" (cross section) blade. The design is classic and very attractive. It comes complete with its original steel scabbard.
The sword features a solid "Gothic" style brass half basket guard, which was originally fully gilt, and has lots of lovely designs on the handguard. The grip is sharkskin shagreen covered wood, with twisted wire wrapping that is now somewhat loose. The sharkskin is very well retains, with just a bit of staining. The hilt is a bit loose on the blade, but still has the original leather blade buffer.
The 32 1/2 inch blade is just lovely and has a great patina. The "pipe back" design gives it great lines, and the swelled tip is definitely quite menacing. The blade still shows the original embossed designs and light engraving. One side has the Swedish Coat of arms, with the iconic "Three Crowns" on a shield. Below this is a panel that reads Fäderneslandet (Fatherland), with another engraving below that reads Eisenhauer (Iron Sword). The other side has a panel that reads Konungen (Kings). These panels and the coat of arms were originally gilt, some of which still remains.
The steel scabbard is fairly standard in design, with two hanger rings, and looks to at one point have been plated. The plating now is mostly missing, and the scabbard has an oxidized patina over most areas on one side. The other side only has a bit of light staining, and has faired much better. The drag is maker marked W. S & C, which we have not been able to identify.
Overall an very nice condition Swedish M1859 officer's Sword, ready to research and display!
